Science and the State

Science and the State

What is the relationship between Science and the State? In what ways do democratic or totalitarian modes of governance presuppose an external source of knowledge about reality? In this block seminar, we will read the classic Descent of Icarus by the political theorist Yaron Ezrahi. Over the course of two days of in-person sessions (remote attendance possible), we will discuss the origins of his ideas, outline his primary arguments, and trace them into the present to evaluate science's role in oppressive or emancipatory state projects. Guest experts will also be invited to give presentations on this topic and relate them to ongoing research at CELLS. Students should have substantial experience reading philosophical or social theory.
